2nd Annual ET Conference brings hope for a cure

VERO BEACH — The 2nd Annual Vero Beach Essential Tremor Awareness Conference held on February 19, 2014 was very well attended again this year.

Featured speakers included Dr. David Vaillancourt, PhD, from University of Florida and Joan Marie Barringer, MEd, a professional counselor who serves on the board of HopeNET.

Dr. Vaillancourt is Professor of Applied Physiology, Neurology, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Florida, currently directing the Laboratory for Rehabilitation Neuroscience. His research includes studies for differentiating and tracking the progression of movement disorders that include Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and atypical parkinsonism.  He also has ongoing studies investigating non-pharmacological interventions for essential tremor.

Ms. Barringer leads an essential tremor support group at the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County.  She started the first essential tremor support group in Washington, DC at Georgetown University Hospital. She is also an accomplished motivational speaker who enthusiastically educates groups through a holistic approach, encouraging individual participation and personal growth.

A representative from Congressman Bill Posey’s office was also in attendance at the conference.

This year’s conference was sponsored by the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County.

An Essential Tremor Support Group has formed in Vero Beach at the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association. It is led by professional counselor Joan Marie Barringer, M.Ed. who has ET herself and uses holistic methods, body, mind and spirit, to improve quality of life for those with Essential Tremor.

Discussion includes self-care, social situations, proper nutrition, healthy habits, medications, doctors who specialize in ET and other topics of interest. Individual sharing about your own life experiences with Essential Tremor.
